BRUSSELS (EUX.TV) — The people of Ireland are to vote again on the Lisbon Treaty on the future of the European Union, according to a draft of the paper that’s under discussion by EU government leaders meeting here at the EU summit.
A new referendum to ratify the Lisbon Treaty will be held in Ireland before the 31st of October, says a draft deal that’s being discussed by EU government leaders meeting here for a summit.
The leaders are set to agree to allow each member state to retain their commissioner. They will also give “legal guarantees” to Ireland on taxes, family policy and the defence policy, leaving room for Ireland to adopt a neutral stance in international conflicts should it want to.
The draft suggests that the Lisbon Treaty then should enter into force by the end of 2009.
The EU summit is expected to end on Friday. Besides the Lisbon Treaty, government leaders are also discussing climate change and the economic crisis.
