Solana’s 2009 Paul Henri Spaak Lecture
Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, on Monday delivered the 2009 Paul Henri Spaak Lecture in Brussels.
This lecture series was named after Paul-Henri Spaak, the Foreign Minister of Belgium who played a decisive role in working out the Treaty of the European Economic Community and EURATOM of 1958.
The series is organized by the Belgian section of the Association of European Journalists. In previous years, the lecture was given by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and by Hans-Gert Poettering, President of the European Parliament.

Ebadi Urges EU to Pull Ambassadors from Iran
Shirin Ebadi, Iranian lawyer, Human Rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize 2003 was today in the European Council at the COHOM – Human Rights Committee – meeting in presence of Riina Kionka, Personal Representative for Human Rights of the High Representative for the EU’s CFSP Javier Solana.
In her statement she called the European Union to be more active in Iran regarding the Human Rights situation in her country. She urged the European Union to ask Iran to hold the violence and the killing and arrests of people. If Iran refuses to do that and the violence continues she urged the EU to ask its governments to recall their ambassadors from Iran with immediate effect.
Obituary: Karel van Miert 1942 – 2009
Karel van Miert, the man who built Europe’s strict competition policy passed away on Monday after a fatal accident in his garden. Van Miert was responsible for creating the right antitrust rules in the European Union that keep monopolies from being created and address abuse of monopoly power. Obituary by Raymond Frenken.
