Fredrik Reinfeldt, Prime Minister of Sweden, which holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, announces at a press conference in Brussels that the leaders of the 27 member states have managed to appoint Belgian Prime Minister Herman van Rompuy as the first-ever permanent president of the union and Brittain’s barroness Cathy Ashton as European Foreign Minister.
