Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands on Tuesday visited European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in Brussels. The royal visit appears to be part of a damage-control effort by the Dutch government amid continued international worries over the influence of right-wing, anti-muslim populist Geert Wilders on Dutch government policy. The Queeen’s visit to the European institutions coincided with the first official ‘government declaration’ in The Hague by Mark Rutte, the new Dutch Prime Minister whose minority-coalition between the conservative-liberal VVD and christian-democrat CDA is only able to govern because of parliamentary support from Geert Wilders’ PVV party.
