Historic map generates more controversy for Hungarian Presidency

At the beginning of the month the Hungarian government came under fire on a number of policy decisions including their new media laws, and possible competition law violations. One thing that passed off seemingly without event was the redecoration of the Justice Lipsius, EU Council building in Brussels. That was until closer inspection of the newly laid carpet revealed a map of greater Hungary for 1848. Not controversial? Well taking Viktor Orban’s governments actions in the last week, as they offered Hungarian citizenship to ethnic hungarians living in surrounding countries, the map, which depicts these regions at a time when they formed part of Hungary’s empire, could be slightly more controversial than first thought.
