Students of Belgian Universities again took to the streets this week, sequestering a popular Brussels square, and dubbing it ‘Place Frites’ on the day Belguim officially replaced Iraq as the longest standing country without a government. The reference to frites, or ‘chips’ in English is a double edged one, it seeks to show the ridiculousness of the political situation, while at the same time displaying a Belgian national icon, which is said to be universally loved, no matter what side of Belgium you come from.
