President Barroso Keynotes The Europe 2020 Summit

www.lisboncouncil.net In the week prior to the spring European Council, The Europe 2020 Summit convened under the timely theme of An Action Plan for the Post-Crisis World and animated a broader, more solution-oriented debate about Europe’s economic and social future. José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, gave an inspiring keynote address. Wim Kok, former prime minister of the Netherlands and author of the foreword to An Action Plan for Europe 2020 Strategic Advice for the Post-Crisis World, a Lisbon Council publication launched at the event, addressed the conference in a video message. The High-Level Panel was preceded by a roundtable discussion with several Action Plan authors including Enrico Giovannini, president of the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) and former chief statistician at the OECD; Geoff Mulgan, director of the Young Foundation; Andreas Schleicher, head of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); Martin Schuurmans, chair of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT); Mark Spelman, head of global strategy at Accenture; Žiga Turk, professor at the University of Ljubljana, former minister for growth of Slovenia and former secretary-general of the Reflection Group on the Future of Europe and Harry Verhaar, senior director for energy and climate change at Philips.
