EU to share ‘best practices’ on preventing radicalisation after Norway killings

Gilles de Kerchove, the European Union’s anti-terror coordinator, said in a public statement on Friday that his service is going to encourage the sharing of ‘best practices’ in Europe in terms of dealing with extremism and the prevention of radicalisation in both left, Islamist and right-wing extremist corners.

Between 2008 and 2010, De Kerchove’s office supervised the production of a 25-minute documentary ‘Preventing Radicalisation; Experiences in EU member states’. This film is based on interviews with terrorism experts, Muslim representatives, psychologists, education specialists and intelligence officials in France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

The documentary was completed in July 2010. It was shown to EU justice ministers during a meeting in Brussels. Given the sensitivity of the topic, De Kerchove’s office is reluctant to release the film to the general public and appears to have chosen to distribute it selectively.
