Battle against HIV/AIDS delivers results, says UN report

2011 was a game changing year for the international response to AIDS and HIV, according to the latest report by the United Nations. The UN says there is is unprecedented scientific progress while political leadership is generating real results. New HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths have fallen to the lowest levels since the peak of the epidemic around five years ago. The number of people dying of AIDS fell to to 1.8 million in 2010, down from a peak of 2.2 million around 2005. At the end of 2010, an estimated 34 million people were living with HIV worldwide, up 17% from 2001. The fight against AIDS has been particularly successful in sub-Saharan Africa, like here in in Rwanda. Sub-saharan Africa remains the region most heavily affected by HJIV. With 68 percent of all HIV infections worldwide. The UN report says there is a notable decline in the rate of new infections. South Africa remains severely affected with an estimated 5.6 million HIV patients. The number of people living with HIV in Eastern Europe and Central Asia has nearly tripled during the last decade. Russia and Ukraine account for almost 90 percent of the epidemic in this region, largely because of sexual relations between people who inject drugs. Addressing the need for a global response, the United Nations now is calling for a transformation in the international approach, and is calling for additional investments that need to match the long-term strategic ambitions instead of the piecemeal short-term …

Euro crisis, Arab countries top EU agenda as Brussels gets back to work

Europe’s economy, the troubles with Greece and the euro and relations with Europe’s neighbors in the East and the Arab world are at the top of the EU’s agenda as eurocrats in Brussels return from their summer break and get back to work. The European Commission held a two-day seminar this week at the Africa museum in Brussels to kick-start their activities. President Jose Manuel Barroso is confident that Europe can overcome its problems. Frictions between member states over the Greek rescue package that was reached in July will continue to flare up during the coming weeks. Barroso’s commission will play a key role when it comes to ensuring that this Greek package is implemented. The weeks ahead will show many more important meetings at an EU level. Poland will host a number of key ministerial meetings, and the European Parliament has 2 plenary sessions scheduled in Strasbourg.

EUFOR Libya: EU prepares military ground operation in Libya, says Finland’s Stubb

Finnish Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb on Tuesday said that the European foreign ministers are planning a military support operation in Libya in case a request will be made by the United Nations and humanitarian aid organisations such as OCHA. The operation, already called ‘EUFOR Libya’ would likely involve ground troops from several EU member states, including France. Germany already indicated it would not be part of EUFOR Libya.

Olli Rehn, Member of the European Commission in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs, on Tuesday presented Interim Economic Forecast for 2011. After a strong performance in the first half of 2010, real GDP growth for both the EU and the euro area slowed down in the second half, the commissioner said. The deceleration was expected and in line with the soft patch in global growth and trade that reflected the withdrawal of stimulus measures. Looking ahead, real GDP growth in 2011 is now forecast at 1.8% in the EU and 1.6% in the euro area, a slight upward revision compared to the autumn forecast. Olli Rehn emphasized there are still high uncertainty, risks to the economic outlook due to the political and economical changes in Middle East and North Africa. ‘Future price movements in the short term will depend largely on economic developments and investor’s sentiment concerning those political developments’, said Olli Rehn.

EU’s Oettinger: Libyan oil fields no longer under Gaddafi’s control

The European Union’s Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger on Monday told a press briefing was confident there would be no Libyan oil blockade as oil fields had fallen into local hands. Some earlier reports had suggested that Gaddafi would burn oil as a warning to the West as he continues to hang onto power in Tripoli.
