The situation in Belarus remains bad. Repression and detention of political prisoners has sent relations with Belarus back to square one. Its president Lukashenka, also known as the last dictator in Europe, is banned from traveling to the EU and hasn’t been invited to the summit. Catherine Ashton, EU’s foreign policy chief, repeatedly expresses her concern over the democracy situation in both Belarus and Ukraine. Back in 2009, the Kremlin warned the European Union not to turn the Eastern Partnership into a …

BRUSSELS (EUX.TV) – After listening to testimony from Belarusian opposition figures, the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday called for a revision of Brussels’ policy toward Minsk. The committee met in advance of a session of the full parliament scheduled for next week in Strasbourg. The chamber is expected to adopt a resolution condemning the violent crackdown following the disputed December 19 presidential election. Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament, underlined that President Alyaksandr Lukashenko’s government lacks democratic legitimacy. “The first priority is to demand from the authorities to free all those remaining in prison and also to drop the heavy charges brought against 31 activists,” Buzek said when meeting representatives of civil society in Belarus. Eva Nyaklyaeva, daughter of imprisoned presidential candidate Uladzimer Nyaklyaeu, urged Brussels to come up with concrete steps to free the activists. She added that the EU “holds the keys” that could free her father from prison, RFE reported. Four presidential candidates and many demonstrators remain imprisoned in Belarus, accused by the authorities of sparking post-election violence. -0-

Opposition candidate for President of Belarus Vladimir Neklyaev was beaten up by Belarus police on Sunday while on his way to a rally in the wake of the presidential elections in what is seen as the last communist dictatorship in Europe. Video footage from YouTube. Original source: Belapan, a state-controlled information agency. See en.belapan.com The EUXTV version of this video only shows selections from an original video that was 5 minutes long. The president of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, condemned the attack. “This cowardly attack on a defenceless candidate for President of Belarus is outrageous and disgraceful. I am shocked as I have learned from the testimonies of witnesses as reported by the media, that Mr Vladimir Neklyaev was beaten up by the police force. This type of behaviour is unacceptable for the international community. I demand from President Lukashenko that he immediately halts all police forces from executing such actions, and to punish all those involved. This incident sheds the worst possible light on the presidential elections held today in Belarus. The citizens of Belarus deserve a democratic country. I express my profound respect for all those who struggle in a peaceful manner for this to come true, like Mr Neklyaev. I wish him a speedy recovery to full health.”
