MEP’s condemn anti-inmigration PVV website, Sarkozy

Members of the European Parliament on Tuesday urged the Dutch government to distance itself from the anti-inmigration website launched by the populist right-wing party PVV. The so-called anti-Pole site encourages Dutch people to report problems caused by Polish, Romanian and Bulgarian citizens. It has so far taken in more than 10000 reactions. During a plenary session in Strasbourg, the leader of the ALDE Group called on the Dutch PM Mark Rutte to condemn the “hatred” and “intolerance” that the website instigates. “The silence of the Dutch government is unacceptable, whether that is a party political issue as the Dutch government says or not, it does not matter, I think all of us we have the right to know what the Dutch authorities think of the initiative taken by one of their citizens on Dutch territory”, VERHOFSTADT said. So far, Rutte has controversially refused to do so. PVV’s leader Girt Vilders has always been a strong supporter of Rutte’s conservative government. “Saying that half the foreigners should leave France as President Mister Sarkozy said and at the same time attacking European partners when it comes to Schenghen, well, I wonder who, in this French election, is the extreme-right candidate?”, VERHOFSTADT said. We may not decide on Schengen tonight, says Finnish PM

Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen on Thursday told journalists waiting outside the European Council that he does not think they will reach a deal on Bulgaria and Rumania’s accession to the Schengen Treaty tonight. Talking about the eurozone crisis, Katainen also said that Europe may “have to do more” to convince the IMF to boost its contribution to the bailout funds.

Corruption blocks Romania’s attempts to join Schengen zone

Romania’s bid to joint the Schengen free border zone hit a further setback this week, as a Romanian media sting exposed rife corruption within the countries parliament. Despite some progress in its application, last december already saw a setback for the country aspiring to join the border free zone, when France an Germany blocked its bid. Romania has remained positive on it’s accession, stating it’s aim to enter the border free zone in march this year. However certain voices such as that of French minister for European affairs have insisted that accession could take years. France and Germany’s position has prompted Romania to threaten to leave the CVM, Cooperation and verification mechanism…. a special monitoring mechanism to assist them in reforming their juridical systems and combat corruption. EP Chief Buzek urges EU Council to deliver documents on Schengen/Romania/Bulgaria

Responding to a journalists question on how the Romanians and Bulgarians are faring in their preparation to join the Schengen area, Jerzy Buzek the EP President has stated that Romania has now completed all the technical aspects necessary to their bid, and the European Parliament is awaiting documentation of this.

EU’s Georgieva: Romania, Bulgaria will get into Schengen this year

In an interview with Euractiv editor Georgi Gotev, Commissioner Georgieva expressed her belief that both Romania and Bulgaria will be granted access to the Schengen border zone sometime this year. “Wether it will be in March 2011, September 2011 or December 2011 is less relevant…” Schengen – The Schengen area and cooperation are founded on the Schengen Agreement of 1985. The Schengen area represents a territory where the free movement of persons is guaranteed. The signatory states to the agreement have abolished all internal borders in lieu of a single external border. Here common rules and procedures are applied with regard to visas for short stays, asylum requests and border controls. Simultaneously, to guarantee security within the Schengen area, cooperation and coordination between police services and judicial authorities have been stepped up.

Rumiana Jeleva Speaks at EU Hearings – Press Point Position: Crisis Response commissioner Country: Bulgaria From Europolitics.info: The European Commission does not wish to comment on the hearing of Bulgarian candidate Rumiana Jeleva so as not to interfere with the hearing process, but President José Manuel Barroso says he maintains his “confidence in all his commissioners” (see separate article). The political groups are also waiting before taking sides. Barroso has “taken note that Rumiana Jeleva denies all the accusations against her” and finds it “inadvisable” to intervene at this stage, said the Commission spokesman, on 13 January. He will respond “to Parliament’s requests in due course” but so far has not received anything from MEPs. A Polish group called ‘Indeks 73′ has launched a petition to protest against the censorhip of David Cerny’s Entropa art work.

“Europe lacks critical reflection on controversial topics,” Indeks 73 writes in an open letter to the Bulgarian authorities that insisted on having their ‘Turkish toilet’ in Entropa covered up by a black cloth. “The real debate respecting opposing voices from different cultures, mentalities and ambitions has disappeared from political agendas.”

The group describes itself as an “informal collective of art activists, journalists and theoriticians” who aim to protect freedom of expression that’s guaranteed under the Polish constitution.

Its open letter carries the signatures of Izabela Kowalczyk PhD (art critic and theoretician, WSHiD Poznan), Agnieszka Kaim (social activist, Kultura Miejska Gdansk), Lidia Makowska (art and social activist, Kultura Miejska Gdansk), Ewa Majewska, PhD. Czechs ready to remove Bulgaria’s toilets from controversial art work

Czech Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs Alexander Vondra on Thursday said the Czech presidency of the European Union is ready to have removed a controversial element of the Entropa art exhibition that has sparked a diplomatic row between Bulgaria and the Czech Republic.

Speaking at the opening of the exhibit in the atrium of the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels, Vondra said the artwork will stay up until the ” end of June”, when the Czech presidency ends, but the Bulgarian element would be removed if the Bulgarian government insists.

Bulgaria has been portrayed through a combination of a Turkish toilet and pipes. The country’s government earlier this week summoned the Czech ambassador in Sofia for an explanation.

Vondra said there are still “open issues” in the talks with Bulgaria. At the presentation, he also apologized to Bulgaria.

“We consider Entropa as a piece of art. Nothing more. Nothing less,” he said.

Czech artist David Cerny, who coordinated the Entropa exhibit, also apologized to Bulgaria and said he would not object to the Bulgarian toilets being removed.
