While the financial and economic storm continues to rage across Europe and the rest of world, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on Saturday received an award for his EU leadership from outgoing European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek, a fellow member of the European People’s Party, Europe’s centre-right political family. The Polish award is known as the Diamond award of Laurels of Abilities and Competence and was handed out during a ceremony in Zabre, Poland. Video footage of this event was made available to media by the audiovisual services of the European Commission.

The other 26 nations and the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) — to which Fidesz belongs — maintain a ‘deafening silence’ on the issue. Guy Verhofstadt, president of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), called for sanctions against Hungary like those used against Austria’s rightist leader Jörg Haider in 2000 (see background). Electric power and heat will make up the bulk of the surge. They already account for 40% of end-use Energy consumption. So reducing CO2 emissions will requires continuous innovations and efficiency gains on the energy supply-side — producing and delivering more energy from fewer inputs. Industrial groups say that supply-side efficiency measures have the potential to significantly reduce the EU’s carbon emissions and meet primary energy savings targets.
