The new ‘Youth Opportunities Initiative’, adopted by the Commission today, calls on Member State to work on preventing early school leaving; helping youngsters develop skills relevant to the labour market; ensuring work experience and on-the-job training and helping young people find a first good job. In addition, the Commission has put forward a set of concrete actions to be financed directly by EU funds.

Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, on Wednesday told the lower house of the German parliament that it could take Europe years to solve its debt crisis, as growing scepticism about the outcome of last week’s EU summit weighed on financial markets. In this speech to the German Bundestag, made available to media by the media service of the German parliament, Merkel defended the move for tighter budget policing in the 27-nation European Union and said that Europe and the eurozone would emerge stronger from the crisis. It was a “process that won’t just last weeks, but months and years,” the chancellor said. There will be “setbacks but if we don’t let ourselves be discouraged … Europe won’t just overcome the crisis, but will emerge from it strengthened,” Merkel said. European Union leaders from 26 of the 27 member states agreed at a high-stakes Brussels summit last week to back a Franco-German drive for tighter budget policing in a bid to save the eurozone.

European Commissioner Olli Rehn, responsible for financial and economic affairs, on Thursday confirmed that the European economy has entered into a double-dip scenario as a result of the souvereign debt crisis. Rehn warned that the eurozone could slip into “a deep and prolonged recession” next year as the debt crisis shows alarming signs of spinning out of control. As the political and economic crisis in Italy spurred fears of a split in the euro zone, the European commissioner for economic and monetary affairs Olli Rehn said: “Growth has stalled in Europe, and there is a risk of a new recession”.

He was speaking as the EU’s autumn economic forecast for next year said confidence had “sharply deteriorated” and was now adversely affecting investment and consumption.

Greece is with its back up against the wall after Germany and France on Wednesday evening told the Greek Prime Minister that his country will not receive eight billion euro in EU bailout money until it decides on whether it wants to stay in the Eurozone or not.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy delivered this message in conference in Cannes, where G20 leaders are meeting on Thursday and Friday.

Greek prime minister Papandreou was summoned to Cannes after his shock announcement that the Greek government plans to hold a referendum on the European plan to save his country from bankruptcy.
Papandreou said a referendum on the euro can take place as early as the 4th of December.
It remains very unclear if it will actually happen. If the Greek parliament on Friday rejects the plan for the vote, then Papandreou will be forced to step down as Prime Minister and new elections will have to be held.

Greece is with its back up against the wall after Germany and France on Wednesday evening told the Greek Prime Minister that his country will not receive EU bailout money until it decides on whether it wants to stay in the Eurozone or not.
