At the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels Sweden’s Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Bildt spoke about the EU’s role in helping to find a two state resolution to the ongoing Israel – Palestine conflict. The Council this afternoon is set to be dominated by the subject following last weeks appeal by a number of eminent ex European Commissioners and leaders, that Ms Catherine Ashton adopt a hardline approach to Israel’s continued settlement building on disputed Palestinian territory. The group has sent Ms Ashton a formal letter asking ‘ministers to set an ultimatum of April 2011 for Israel to cease building or see the Union seek an end to the existing US-led peace talks in favour of a UN solution. Of the voices condemning the EU’s response to Israel in this situation, Javier Solana, Madam Ashton’s predecessor has also spoken out.

Iran’s top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili was in Geneva, Switzerland on Thursday to discuss his country’s nuclear ambitions with representatives of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and Germany, also known as the ’5+1 group’, which is represented by Javier Solana, the High Representative of the European Union. After the meeting, Solana gave a 15 minute press conference at a hotel in Geneva. This is the full, unedited video of the press conference. The United States was represented by American diplomat Robert Burns, who met privately with Jalili during lunch. The Guardian newspaper reported that It was unclear what the two men discussed, but the encounter had been planned in advance by the US state department in the hope of breaking a four-year impasse over Iran’s nuclear activities. One official described the meeting as a “significant conversation”. A western diplomat said there were no breakthroughs at the morning session but Iran had begun to discuss the nuclear question under concerted pressure from diplomats of six major powers. He said the session began with both sides restating earlier positions. Jalili, Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, said Iran was within its rights to pursue a peaceful nuclear programme and suggested the negotiations focus on broader, global themes.
