Van Rompuy to UN: Europe takes up its global responsibility

In New York on Thursday, European Council President Herman van Rompuy for the first time ever addressed the United Nations General Assembly. Van Rompuy addressed issues such as Syria, the famine in Somalia, nuclear proliferation, North Korea, Iran and climate change, all of which the international community has a role to play. He said that the European Union takes up its responsibility, supporting the “forces of hope” and “fighting the causes of worry” with means, money and manpower.

Somalia Famine: Islamists keep aid workers out

International efforts to fight the famine in Somalia are in trouble now that Islamist groups in the country continuing to deny access to aid workers. Only the Norwegian Refugee Council, the Red Cross and Islamic Relief are not banned from working inside Somalia. It means the European Union has the rely on these organisations to provide aid inside Somalia, and on camps like this one in Doolow, near the borders with Kenya and Ethiopia in areas that that are not controlled by Al Shabab. Kristalina Georgieva, EU Commisisoner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response: “We can get aid into the famine zones and we also can make it possible for many more places in Somalia to be provided with food, water, medical support. So IDPs do not have to cross all the way into Ethiopia or in Kenya, creating a bigger refugee problem for the future.” Somalia’s Al-Shabab islamist movement has said that the famine that has been declared by the United Nations was a ‘politically motivated lie’. Al-Shabab has banned 16 aid organisations and also the World Food Programme from delivering aid in Somalia because it accuses them of spreading Christian thinking. Since 2008, a total of 36 international aid workers have been killed while working in Somalia. Hague: EU needs to be more effective in Somalia piracy fight

British Foreign Secretary William Hague at the European Council for the Foreign Ministers Council has spoken about the Eu;s need to combat piracy in Somalia, and the need for the EU to pursue more effective policies. He also touched upon the upcoming Sudanese Referendum, asking the government to respect the outcome. Finally he went on to congratulate Turkey on making reforms, in light of it’s possible future accession into the European Union.

Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative / EC President and Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Prime Minister of Mauritius gave a speech at the ministerial conference on the fight against piracy, in front of an audience with Jack Lang, special adviser on piracy at the United Nations She spoke about the efforts being made by Europe in terms of project funding and operational support in tackling piracy at it’s base, on the land not at sea.

French navy helicopter fires guns to stop pirates (March 2010)

The French navy fregate Nivose, taking part in the EU NAVFOR Atalanta mission, earlier this month stopped two vessels off the Somali coast in the Gulf of Aden and arrested their crew members under suspicion of piracy. This video footage was made available to broadcasters via the Council of the European Union. It’s not clear what happened to the pirates filmed in this particular video. It’s likely there were taken to the Kenyan port of Mombasa. Pirates have been released on several instances because there is unclarity over where to put them on trial. Kenya, which already holds more than 100 suspected pirates in custody, has been complaining about having to share an “unfair” part of the burden. EU anti-piracy mission goes into 6th month

This video report, produced by the European Council for its own website and YouTube channel, gives an official update on the current state of the EU NavFor Atalanta mission, designed to fight piracy in the Gulf of Aden and the Somali Basin.

Since April, the EU’s counter-piracy operation is under Spanish Command. Two Swedish corvettes, the HMS Malmo and HMS Stockholm and a support ship, have recently joined the European naval force, which is based in Djibouti. EU Foreign Ministers this month extended the operating area for Atalanta beyond the Somalia basin and the Gulf of Aden to the Seychelles.

The Swedish corvette HMS Malmo, whose commander is interviewed in the EU Council video, earlier this week fired its guns during its first direct confrontation with pirates who tried to enter a Greek merchant ship. Seven pirates were arrested.

Rear-Admiral Philip Jones, Operation Commander of EU NAVFOR Somalia held a press conference on counter-piracy operation.

The operation, called Operation Atalanta, is the European Union’s first naval task force, and it has been assembled to ensure the protection of vessels of the World Food Programme delivering food aid to displaced persons in Somalia as well as protection to other vulnerable shipping off Somalia and to provide deterrence to acts of piracy by presence and surveillance.
