Abbas calls on EU to support Palestinian UN membership

President of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, on Wednesday travelled to Brussels in an attempt to get European support on Palestine’s UN membership bid. “We raised the Palestinian flag at Unesco. Now we hope EU will come when we raise the flag at the United Nations, with their support”, Abbas said. For his part, President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, highlighted the Union’s commitment to a two-state solution.

2011 was a game changing year for the international response to AIDS and HIV, according to the latest report by the United Nations. The UN says there is is unprecedented scientific progress while political leadership is generating real results. New HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths have fallen to the lowest levels since the peak of the epidemic around five years ago. The number of people dying of AIDS fell to to 1.8 million in 2010, down from a peak of 2.2 million around 2005. At the end of 2010, an estimated 34 million people were living with HIV worldwide, up 17% from 2001. The fight against AIDS has been particularly successful in sub-Saharan Africa, like here in in Rwanda. Sub-saharan Africa remains the region most heavily affected by HJIV. With 68 percent of all HIV infections worldwide. The UN report says there is a notable decline in the rate of new infections. South Africa remains severely affected with an estimated 5.6 million HIV patients. The number of people living with HIV in Eastern Europe and Central Asia has nearly tripled during the last decade. Russia and Ukraine account for almost 90 percent of the epidemic in this region, largely because of sexual relations between people who inject drugs. Addressing the need for a global response, the United Nations now is calling for a transformation in the international approach, and is calling for additional investments that need to match the long-term strategic ambitions instead of the piecemeal short-term …

Ashton pressures Israel, Palestinians to resume talks

Europe’s foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton travelled to Israel and the Palestinian territories this weekend in an attempt to get the parties to return to the negotiating table and get the Middle East Peace Process back on track. Palestine is preparing to apply for membership of the United Nations in September. Ashton wants to push the Palestineans and Israel to get back to the negotiating table. The talks have been suspended for almost a year because of the dispute over Jewish settlements in Palestine. Ashton met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad on Sunday and also discussed the peace process with Norway’s foreign minister. In her meeting with Israeli government representatives, Ashton was told that Israel feels that the Palestinian plan to seek UN statehood recognition is “counter-productive” and “misguided.” Ashton’s three-day visit to the Middle East ends on Monday with a visit to Jordan’s King Abdullah.

The European Union and the United States of America have found some common ground on a two state solution to the Isreal-Palestine conflict. President Obama this week called for a roadmap for such a solution to be based on the 1967 borders divide. He said US support of Israel is “unshakable,” but his endorsement of the 1967 borders will likely anger some Israelis. The European Union have followed suit and support the plan.
