Commission pulls plug on ‘racist’, ‘sexist’ propaganda video

The European Commission this week pulled the plug on this 127.000 euro propaganda video after it was accussed of being ‘racist’ and ‘sexist.’ The video, intended to promote the benefits of EU enlargement, shows three men from various ethnic minorities using different threatening martial-arts skills surrounding a young white woman dressed in a yellow jumpsuit similar to that worn by the heroine in the Hollywood hit movies “Kill Bill.” The three men include a Kung Fu master from East Asia, a black man practicing the Brazilian art of Capoeira, and an Asian man doing Kalaripayattu moves. Stefano Sannino, the official in charge of the Commission’s enlargement and neighbourhood policy, insisted that the film, targeting 16 to 24-year olds, had been well received by target audiences and focus groups. “The clip featured typical characters for the martial arts genre: it started with demonstration of their skills and ended with all characters showing their mutual respect, concluding in a position of peace and harmony. The genre was chosen to attract young people and to raise their curiosity on an important EU policy,” he said. But following many complaints, Mr Sannino said that, despite the €127000 production cost, the two minute video would be axed. “The clip was absolutely not intended to be racist and we obviously regret that it has been perceived in this way,” he said. “We apologise to anyone who may have felt offended. Finance ministers from European Union heavyweights Germany, France and Britain planned to issue a joint statement designed to calm financial markets jitters over the Irish crisis, German officials said Friday. The statement was being drafted by officials on the sidelines of a Group of 20 (G20) summit in Seoul. According to the German news agency DPA, the G20 was expected to refer to EU plans for a permanent eurozone rescue fund for countries that run into financial difficulty. Such plans were discussed by EU leaders at a meeting in Brussels last week. The current rescue plan expires in 2013. The news came over growing concerns that Ireland would be forced to follow in Greece’s steps and call for an international bailout because of its record debt levels. Yields on 10-year Irish bonds hit an all-time high of 9.26 per cent Thursday, nearly four times the yield that is demanded by investors for equivalent German bonds.

French navy helicopter fires guns to stop pirates (March 2010)

The French navy fregate Nivose, taking part in the EU NAVFOR Atalanta mission, earlier this month stopped two vessels off the Somali coast in the Gulf of Aden and arrested their crew members under suspicion of piracy. This video footage was made available to broadcasters via the Council of the European Union. It’s not clear what happened to the pirates filmed in this particular video. It’s likely there were taken to the Kenyan port of Mombasa. Pirates have been released on several instances because there is unclarity over where to put them on trial. Kenya, which already holds more than 100 suspected pirates in custody, has been complaining about having to share an “unfair” part of the burden. Wow! A real 120.000 viewers, on a population of 500 million, have tuned into EuroparlTV since it launched last year, according to a report in Germany’s Welt Online. Costs up to 2010: 24 million euros.

So far, that’s 200 euro per viewer. No, that’s unfair… Let’s triple these viewing figures to include 2009 and 2010… It would be about 65 euro per viewer. Is that the cost-per-viewer ratio the parliament was expecting from a WebTV project?

EUX.TV has generated more than 2 million video views since its launch in 2006. Costs: a fraction of what EuroparlTV got, plus a lot of frustration over how Brussels favors subsidized EU projects that try to compete with an independent project like ours. The cost-per-viewer for EUXTV is somewhere around 5 cents, a quick calculation shows.
